Interesting stuff. Weird stuff with Dragona and them calling her a man lol. If this is the confirmation of that I'm still gonna call her "her" cause come on bruh.

Howler's being closed in on, which makes me think he's probably gonna do something desperate. Either him or Key West gonna use their Stands to do a daring escape. I'm not exactly sure if they're gonna be able to go through with signing those papers.

Nice to see Paco's backstory, too, him being recruited by Meryl reminds me too much of Bucciarati recruiting the Part 5 gang lmao. Whatever the case, they care for Meryl, and she was kidnapped by Ningbo and Laem. I guess we'll see what happens with that, but what are they gonna do with her?

Break next month. Blegh!

Smooth Operators making the money fake money to prevent the Lava Rock from breaking was really smart.

The whole thing with Dragona's gender has always been weird. Like, we still haven't heard anything about how Dragona themselves views their gender. Everything we've heard about it has been from an outsider's perspective. I hope we finally get some confirmation after this whole arc. Maybe afterwards Dragona tells Jodio how they felt about being called a woman by Howler. I just hope that the reason we haven't heard a definitive answer to Dragona's gender is because Araki is cooking a character Arc for them (like coming out as trans maybe??) and not because Araki hasn't researched different gender identities.

Really hope Meryl Mei Qi is ok. She's one of my favorite characters so far and I really want to see more of her. I still wonder if she has a Stand.

Paco's backstory was ok. Not as good as Jodio and Dragona's. Now the only one whose backstory we don't know anything about is Usagi, but I believe we'll see it eventually.

But yeah. A good chapter, but not absolutely amazing. I'm still really REALLY looking forward to the next one. I have no idea what way this story is going to go from here.

Araki has always struck me as the kind of author who uses queer culture as an aesthetic. With Dragona I thought that maybe he was trying to go beyond that since he managed to write an extremely on the nose trans character with a backstory centered on gender dysphoria and transphobia. But perhaps I was expecting a bit too much from a Japanese dude in his 60s lol. I'm not too disappointed since the whole "looks and acts like a woman but is actually a man! 😱" trope is found all over anime and manga, so I'm used to it.

Regardless, a transfem coded character is going be interpreted as transfem by most people reading the series. Dragona's existence challenges cis-normativity so fans are perfectly valid for interpreting the character as trans/nb/gnc.

@Captainjeddy I think that this chapter doesn't change anything about the context of the character nor does it invalidate their experience or how the audience connects to them at all. I think it might actually be better that Dragona isn't explicitly a trans girl because this is a more nuanced / and in my opinion realistic take on a gender nonconforming character.

Araki doesn't write things just for shits and giggles like this, and this definitely isn't the same kind of Boy Who Looks Like A Girl anime trope.

Paco got a backstory scene out of nowhere he's dying somewhere in the next 3 chapters 100%. Also a hiatus directly after a cliffhanger got me wanting to kms

@Green_Giorno Never said that their experience was invalidated, nor did I say that the audience couldn't connect. I in fact said the opposite if you reread my last sentence. With what you said about how this doesn't change the context of the character, I think you may be right about that and I was being too rash; this chapter was consistent with how Dragona was introduced to us by Jodio in chapter 1 after all.

This is honestly becoming one of my favorite arcs in the franchise, its been so intense and the walls feel like they are closing in on everybody all at once. I'd almost think Howler is a fake out villain if it weren't for us not knowing his stand still but I imagine things are about to go very wrong for Jodio in the next chapter.

@Captainjeddy What's wrong with a character looking like a girl but being a guy?

@Jhaku nothing, I was just disappointed that it could have been something more. Challenging gender norms is still a good thing regardless

i think this is a slightly off reading of the dynamic between the cast. araki has made a point to not actually have dragona speak up on her own identity, and rather have it broadly interpreted by the people around her. while jodio is obviously on dragona's side and is fully supportive of her, he's been depicted as having a vividly off-kilter level of social understanding, even with his closest family; their relationship is bizarre in that sense. and he's the person who've we've heard from the most about what dragona is or isn't!

from my perspective, the little out-of-place tangent that was included in this chapter about dragona's identity seems pretty intentional in its out-of-place nature. maybe im just too optimistic, but it feels like buildup to a far more complex direction for dragona's character.

obviously its not like araki is a pure-minded saint who can do no wrong when it comes to this sort of stuff. but, ive noticed that, over the course of the series, he's very often improved on the things that were previously poor. that's why i have more faith.
